First home buyers continue to set records in NSW
November 24, 2009
New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees has announced a new record set by first home buyers in New South Wales, with the western suburbs leading the way.
Mr Rees said more than $152 million in first home buyer benefits were handed out in October this year with the top five suburbs for grants all in western Sydney (see: list below).
“These benefits helped more than 6,400 NSW first home buyers achieve their dream in October this year alone,” Mr Rees suggested. “October 2009 was the best-performing month of October since the first home buyer grants benefits began in 2000.”
Figures from the NSW Office of State Revenue show:
* 6,447 first home buyer grants worth $97.96 million were paid out in October 2009, compared to 3,566 grants worth $25.58 million paid out in October 2008;
* Stamp duty concessions worth $54 million were granted in October, compared to $33.8 million worth of concessions in October 2008;
* The top five suburbs for grants were all in western Sydney, with first home buyers in Liverpool again topping the list and receiving benefits worth $2.65 million
* Since the introduction of first home buyer grants in July 2000, almost 434,300 first home buyers have received grants and stamp duty exemptions worth in excess of $6.5 billion.
Treasurer Eric Roozendaal cited the housing sector as a vital part of the NSW economy and contends that the 50 per cent stamp duty cut for new dwellings under $600,000 in the state has continued to stimulate the sector.
“Owning a home is an investment in a better future and is part of the great Australian dream,” Mr Roozendaal said.
